Domestic & Family Violence Services

Dawn House

Dawn House Inc provides services to women and children escaping domestic and family violence in Darwin with the women’s shelter, domestic violence community education service, and domestic violence support, including counselling. 

DAIWS provides safe and culturally appropriate services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who are homeless or escaping family violence. The services provided include support, referral, outreach and domestic violence crisis accommodation.

Ironbark Indigenous Support (IIS) is an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander specific Domestic and Family Violence support service in the Darwin and Palmerston areas (including the Town Camps). IIS facilitate support to clients/families who are experiencing DFV or who have in the past and provide Intensive Case Management and collaboration with other support services, establish supported referral pathways relevant to the client’s needs, and advocacy. 

Provides crisis accommodation and case-management support for families escaping domestic violence. Support includes advocacy, referral and assistance with attending legal appointments, court hearings, Centrelink services and other support services. Outreach support is also provided for families not accommodated at the centre. 

Sexual Violence Services

Ruby Gaea

Ruby Gaea provides specialist post-initial trauma sexual assault counselling, education and training service.

The Darwin Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) provides medical, forensic and counselling services to anyone who may have experienced any form of sexual assault (acute, recent or historical). Services available to adults and children (female and male). There is no fee for services. 

Crisis / Medium Term Accommodation Services

Catherine Booth House

Catherine Booth House is a safe crisis centre for women 18 years and over. It provides crisis accommodation and intensive case management for women at risk or experiencing family and domestic violence.

DAIWS provides safe and culturally appropriate services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who are homeless or escaping family violence. The services provided include support, referral, outreach and domestic violence crisis accommodation. 

Dawn House Women’s Shelter provides safe and secure crisis accommodation for women with accompanying children escaping domestic violence in their homes or community.

Central Australian Women’s Legal Service (CAWLS)


The Central Australian Women’s Legal Service (CAWLS) is a free legal service for women in the Central Australia and Barkly regions of the NT. CAWLS provides free legal advice for all women in Central Australia and can help with information about legal issues, legal advice and representation, referral to support services, community legal education and law reform advocacy. 

The Katherine Women’s Information and Legal Service (KWILS) is a not-for-profit Community Legal Centre based in Katherine, Northern Territory, providing women in the Katherine and Big Rivers regions, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, access to free and professional legal services. KWILS provide community legal education and undertake advocacy and law reform, and provide outreach services to remote women in the Katherine region. 

The Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS) is a free, confidential service that provides legal services across the Northern Territory . DCLS offers a range of general and specialist services, including the Tenants’ Advice Service, Seniors and Disability Rights Service, and Veteran’s Legal Service. 

The Domestic Violence Legal Service is a free service for victims and people at risk of domestic and family violence. DVLS provides confidential legal advice and representation services for domestic violence order (DVO) matters, including a duty lawyer service and community legal education. 

The Environmental Defenders Office (NT) (EDONT) is a community-based legal service practising in planning and environmental law and providing legal advice & advocacy on public-interest planning & environmental law for individuals and groups. The service also provides education for community groups and engages in law reform. 

The Law Society Northern Territory controls the affairs of the legal profession in the Northern Territory. The Law Society Northern Territory offers services to the community including the handling of complaints about lawyers and coordinating community legal education events such as Law Week. The Society cannot give legal advice, however can provide a list of firms who have identified that they specialise in particular areas of law. 

The North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Services (NAAFLS) is a Family Violence Prevention Legal Service that provides culturally sensitive legal assistance, casework, advice, support and a counselling service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who are victims/survivors of family violence or sexual assault across the Top End, East Arnhem, and Big Rivers regions of the NT. 

The North Australian Aboriginal Legal Services (NAAJA) is an Aboriginal Legal Service providing a range of legal services for Indigenous people across the Northern Territory, including legal help (criminal and civillaw), community legal education and advocacy for the rights of Aboriginal people before the law. 

The NT Legal Aid Commission provides free and confidential legal services to people across the Northern Territory. They provide legal advice and representation (subject to eligibility) in criminal, family, and civil law, duty lawyer services, family dispute resolution, community legal education and contribute to policy and law reform.

eSafetyWomen is designed to empower Australian women to take control of their online experiences. The eSafetyWomen resources aim to help women manage technology risks and abuse by giving women the tools they need to be confident when online.

Counselling and other Support Services

Amity Community Services

Amity Community Services is an incorporated non-government community organisation providing a range of services pertaining to behaviours of habit, including alcohol and other drugs, and gambling. 

Anglicare NT is one of the largest providers of government-funded welfare, social justice and community development programs in the Northern Territory. They provide programs and support including Family Dispute Resolution (Mediation), Counselling Services, Financial Counselling Services, Family and Parenting Support, and Housing and Tenancy Support. 

The Australian Red Cross provides migration support services, disaster response, and community services including The Shak (youth centre). 

CatholicCareNT offers programs and services including counselling and separation services, mental health services, financial wellbeing and capability programs, and housing support services. 

Danila Dilba Health Service is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation providing culturally-appropriate, comprehensive primary health care and community services to Biluru (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) people in the Yilli Rreung (Greater Darwin) region of the Northern Territory. 

EASA offers an integrated package of psychological and organisational development services to organisations across the Northern Territory, including counselling services. 

Family Planning Welfare Association of the NT (FPWNT) provides comprehensive reproductive and sexual health care, education and training. 

HK Training and Consultancy provide Money Management services, providing support to individuals and families through the use of tools and resources to develop budgets, debt management plans, savings goals, understanding banking products and services and also assisting clients with bill paying. 

headspace Darwin is a free and confidential service where young people aged between 12 and 25 can access qualified youth mental health professionals. headspace offers free services that can help you with your mental health and wellbeing, as well as provide assistance in accessing education, employment services and alcohol and other drug services. 

Larrakia Nation is an Aboriginal organisation providing representation for the Larrakia people, the traditional owners of Darwin, and services for Aboriginal people in the region including community services, homelessness support, and land and sea monitoring. 

Lifeline is a national charity providing all Australians experiencing a personal crisis with access to 24 hour crisis support and suicide prevention services. 

Melaleuca Australia (formerly known as Melaleuca Refugee Centre) provides counselling and early settlement support services to people of refugee background and facilitates community development programs in the areas of cultural transition, strengthening families and peace leadership. 

Mission Australia’s integrated nationwide services help people find safe and affordable housing, support disadvantaged children and families, empower troubled young people, assist people with mental illness and disability, etc. 

The MCNT is the peak body providing advocacy and services for individuals, families and communities from refugee and migrant backgrounds in the Top End of Australia. 

NAAJA Throughcare aims to reduce repeat offending by addressing the ‘throughcare’ needs of adult prisoners and youth detainees. Throughcare is defined as the coordinated provision of support to a person, beginning when they first go into prison and continuing until they are living a safe, fulfilling and trouble free life back out in the community 

The Northern Territory Working Women’s Centre (NTWWC) provides free and confidential information and support to women about work related matters. The Centre particularly targets services to those in a disadvantaged bargaining position, insecure and low paid work. 

Relationships Australia NT offer a broad range of counselling and mediation services to individuals, families and communities throughout the Northern Territory. 

Somerville Community Services Inc is a non-government, not for profit, youth, family and community welfare organisation indigenous to the Northern Territory providing disability and family services. 

YWCA Darwin is a non-religious organisation that achieves positive change by providing advocacy, programs and services for women, families and young people in Darwin, including  parenting support programs, and a youth diversion program.

LawInfo NT

LawInfo NT is a website with plain language information about the law. You can read, watch, listen to, or look at information; get information in different languages; and find a legal service near you. 

The Northern Territory Law Handbook is a resource and practical guide to legal issues that affect people living in the Northern Territory. The layout is similar to a Wikipedia page and the resource includes information about the legal system and different areas of law. 

ShelterMe is an online directory of services for homeless Territorians, operated by NT Shelter and funded by the NT Government. There are no fees to list your service on ShelterMe, however individuals wishing to access listed services should be aware that some service providers may charge fees.

You can call TEWLS on 1800 234 441 and ask to speak to us with an interpreter. We can organise this for free. You will need to tell us your name, your phone number and the language that you speak. We will then call you back with an interpreter on the phone.

TEWLS are able to organise interpreters for most languages, including Aboriginal languages and Auslan.
